The most common mistake isn't picking the wrong brand. It's ignoring the nameplate. Read the nameplate first. Frame size, voltage, duty cycle, service factor—those matter more than the name on the box. This holds true whether you're buying one motor or fifty, and it holds true for small orders just as much as large ones.

AC Induction Motors: Workhorses That Deserve Respect
An AC induction motor is the most common industrial motor for a reason: it's simple, rugged, and cheap to maintain. No brushes, no commutator, just a rotating magnetic field doing the work. But "simple" doesn't mean "interchangeable." A NEMA Design B motor behaves differently from a Design C motor when it starts under load. If you swap one for the other, you could overload the circuit.
According to NEMA MG-1, the standard service factor for an open drip-proof AC induction motor is 1.15, meaning it can sustain a 15% overload for a limited time, subject to nameplate conditions.
That's a real standard, not a brochure promise. If someone quotes you a motor with a 1.0 service factor and doesn't mention it, that's a red flag.
What's a Servo Motor? (And When to Choose One)
Think of a servo motor as a motor with a feedback loop. That's it. The controller reads the motor's position or speed and adjusts power continuously. This gives you precise motion control for robotics, CNC, and packaging equipment. If you need exact positioning, a servo motor is usually the right tool. If you just need to turn a pump, an AC induction motor is cheaper and simpler.
I've seen engineers over-spec to a servo motor when an induction motor would've done the job. Maybe 25% of the servo requests I review—no, I'm mixing that up with the actuator numbers. The point is, know the difference before you buy.
RCEL Electric Actuator: The Hidden Linear Option
RCEL electric actuators can solve applications that need linear motion instead of rotary. They are compact, self-contained units—usually a DC motor driving a worm gear and a lead screw. I didn't encounter them until a customer asked for one in a solar tracker system. At first, I thought they were calling a gear motor by the wrong name. They weren't.
If you're looking at the RCEL line, pay attention to the stroke length and the dynamic load. The motor voltage matters too. A 12V DC unit won't run on 24V without a converter. Simple, but easy to miss.
Small Orders Deserve the Same Standard
Here's where I'll get a little personal. Early in my career, I ordered a $200 motor from a big supplier. They treated me like a nuisance—slow emails, unclear specs, no follow-up. I never bought from them again. The vendors who took my small orders seriously? They're the ones I now place $20,000 orders with. That lesson stuck with me.
Small doesn't mean unimportant. A customer buying one Leeson motor for a boat lift deserves the same nameplate verification as a factory buying fifty. I've made sure our team follows that rule. At least, that's been my experience with single-unit orders.
When Leeson Isn't the Answer
No company is the right choice for every situation. If you need a motor for a hazardous location, the brand doesn't override the UL or ATEX rating. You need the right certificate, not just a robust design. And if your budget is razor-thin, a used motor from a reputable dealer might make more sense than a brand-new one—though you'll lose the warranty.
That said, if you know your specs, and the supplier is willing to help you confirm them, Leeson is a solid option. I've seen their motors run for decades in harsh environments with basic maintenance. The motor won't care if you're a startup or a Fortune 500. But the supplier might.
Pick a supplier who doesn't.
