If your motor just died, you aren't looking for a lecture on motor theory. You're looking for a replacement that fits, runs, and shows up before your deadline. This checklist is for anyone buying a Leeson motor—or trying to cross-reference one—when the clock is running.
I coordinate rush orders at a motion-control distributor. In the last four years, I've processed more than 200 urgent motor requests, including same-day turnarounds for factories, boat lifts, and custom machines. The pattern? The failures almost always trace back to ordering the wrong motor quickly, not ordering slowly. Here's the 7-step checklist I use, in order.

The 7-Step Rush Order Checklist
- Write down the complete nameplate data. Not just the horsepower. If you call a supplier and say “I need a Leeson motor, 1 HP,” you're going to get questions you don't know the answers to. Voltage? RPM? Frame? Enclosure? Service factor? Phase? The nameplate has all of it. Take a photo and zoom in. If the nameplate is worn, use the model number to pull the spec sheet. A Leeson DC motor 3/4 HP can look almost identical to a 1 HP AC motor from across the room. They are not interchangeable.
- Identify the motor type before you compare prices. Is it AC, DC, servo, or gearmotor? That matters more than brand. A Leeson boat lift motor might look like a standard AC motor, but the application often requires a brake and a specific mounting. Swap in a motor without the brake setup and the lift may not hold. If you need a servo motor sewing machine replacement, you need to know whether the controller is compatible with the motor's feedback cable. And when someone asks for “top gear motors,” they need the gearbox ratio and output RPM, not just the motor HP. Without the ratio, “top gear motor” is just a phrase.
- Measure the shaft and the mounting face. The frame size is a starting point, not an answer. According to NEMA MG 1, the frame number gets you in the ballpark for mounting dimensions, but it doesn't tell you the electrical specs—voltage, phase, enclosure, or duty. Get the calipers out. Check shaft length, keyway width, and bolt circle. I'm not an engineer, so I can't help with custom shaft design. But from a distribution perspective, the phrase “it should fit” has lost more deadlines than any supplier issue I know.
- Check for brakes, encoders, and controls. The motor is often the cheap part. The brake, encoder, or drive is what kills the schedule. A Leeson boat lift motor often comes with a brake release mechanism. Swap in a motor without that and the lift may not hold. If you're replacing a servo motor sewing machine setup, you need to know whether the controller is compatible with the motor's feedback cable. Don't assume a same-brand motor and drive will talk to each other. Check first.
- Search with the model number, not just the brand. If you type “leeson-motor” into a search bar, you'll get plenty of results. Add the exact model number. Then compare at least two sources. Cross-reference guides from other brands are useful, but verify the nameplate data against the replacement model. Twice this year alone, I've seen a so-called cross reference that was close on the frame but wrong on the shaft.
- Don't over-spec the replacement. A higher service factor or a premium efficiency rating is nice, but only if it's physically and electrically compatible. A 3/4 HP motor with a bigger frame won't fit the same mount. A motor with the wrong voltage won't run. One customer saved $80 by choosing a “universal” motor without the right mounting flange, then paid $220 in machining to adapt it. The cheap motor wasn't cheap. Buy the one that matches the old motor's specs.
- Confirm every part around the motor before you order. This is the step everyone skips. Trust me on this one. You're not just buying a motor. You're buying the coupling, belt, key, base, bearing, and maybe the motor starter. If the motor moves a linear slide, check the linear bearing. Example: what size is an LM8LUU linear bearing? It has an 8 mm bore, a 15 mm OD, and a 35 mm length. The standard LM8UU is 8 x 15 x 24 mm. That extra 11 mm matters if you're fitting it into an existing carriage. A rush order doesn't do much good if you're still waiting on a bearing.
Common Mistakes That Turn a Rush Order Into a Disaster
Paying for overnight freight before confirming stock. I watched a client pay $180 for same-day shipping on a motor that was still on a delivery truck. It didn't leave the warehouse until the next morning. Total time saved: zero.
Ignoring the enclosure. A TEFC motor is not the same as an ODP motor. If the old motor was TEFC and you order ODP, moisture will find it.
Trusting someone else's measurements. If a maintenance log says the shaft is 5/8 inch, verify it anyway. People write down the wrong numbers all the time.
We didn't have a formal verification checklist in our shop for years. The third time we reordered the wrong motor because the nameplate was covered in grease, I put this list together. Should have done it after the first time.
Why This Works
In March 2024, a client called at 2:00 PM needing a 3/4 HP DC motor for a packaging line that was down. Normal lead time was four days.
