Back in March 2023, I approved a $3,000 Leeson motor order that came back completely wrong. Not the motor's fault—I'd missed a digit in the part number. That mistake changed how I look at every motor purchase.
If you're ordering a Leeson motor for the first time, or even if you've done it before, this checklist is for you. It's not a textbook guide. It's the list I run through before signing off on any motor-related PO. Five steps, plus the mistakes I still see happening. A standard AC induction motor might work fine on a VFD within a limited range, but a dedicated inverter-duty motor can run at lower speeds without overheating. The base price difference might be $200. The repair cost after an overheated motor is way more than that. Bottom line: decide whether you need VFD compatibility before you order, not after the motor is sitting in your warehouse.
Step 3: Don't default to the same motor style just because you always have
Every manufacturing plant has its standard drivers. But the best fit for your specific machine might be different. For example, if you need precise positioning with high repeatability, an integrated servo motor—one with the drive electronics mounted right on the motor housing—can simplify your control cabinet and reduce wiring labor. Leeson's broader product lineup includes servo and stepper options, so it's worth checking the catalog before assuming they only make standard AC motors.
But then again, if the application is simply a conveyor running at a constant speed, a standard AC motor is probably the workhorse you want. Don't over-spec. I've seen buyers add $800 of servo cleverness to a $400 motor job because they liked the idea of "future-proofing." That's wasted money unless you've actually got a roadmap that calls for it. Honest limitations work both ways: sometimes the cheap option is the right one.
Step 4: Check accessories and hidden extras before you approve
Accessories are where procurement budgets go to die. Shaft keys, grounding rings, encoder kits, brake kits, thermal protection. You need line-item visibility on every add-on.
One thing that's caught me off guard: motors with a disc brake. On some Leeson models, you'll need a disc brake caliper tool to manually release the brake during setup or maintenance. It's a small tool, but if it's not on your technician's cart, you'll watch them fight the brake with a screwdriver. Not a fun conversation when the line is down.
Also verify whether the motor comes with a conduit box or flying leads, and whether the thermal protection matches your control circuit. Each added feature changes the part number and the price. I always ask the distributor for an itemized quote. If they can't break it down, that's a red flag—it's a deal-breaker for me because it means they don't know their own product details.
Step 5: Compare TCO, not just the sticker price
I keep saying TCO, but here's what it really means: total cost of ownership. The cheapest quote can be the most expensive motor if it fails 14 months in and you're paying downtime, emergency freight, and overtime labor. That's the math the vendor hopes you won't do.
Set up a simple spreadsheet: motor price, shipping, accessories, expected life, energy consumption, and repair history. For a 5 HP Leeson motor running 6,000 hours a year, energy cost often exceeds the purchase price in the first year. So a motor with an efficiency percentage two points higher can realistically pay for itself over two or three years. The efficiency numbers are in the datasheets—use them.
One caveat: my pricing benchmarks are from Q4 2024, and motor prices have been volatile since. Don't treat any quote as permanent. Check current prices and lead times with your distributor, and verify the part number is still current. The catalog changes, too, so always work from the latest version.
Common mistakes that still happen
Here's where I see orders go sideways:
- Assuming a motor is VFD-rated because it's "brand new." Verify the nameplate says inverter duty, or look up the exact catalog line.
- Ordering the wrong frame style. C-face vs. foot-mounted vs. round frame is a detail that matters enormously.
- Skipping an encoder option. If you may need feedback later, adding an encoder shaft or mounting provisions now costs far less than retrofitting.
- Ignoring lead time. Some Leeson models are built to order. A stock motor ships in days; a built-to-order unit can take weeks. Your production schedule won't wait.
Bottom line: the right motor is the one that fits your application, your budget, and your downtime risk. No single brand is the best everywhere. I recommend Leeson for a lot of situations—their documentation is solid, their warranty support is respectable, and the product lineup is broad. But if you need, say, a washdown motor beyond what their line offers, I'll happily point you elsewhere. Knowing the limits of what you're buying is part of the job.
